Quality Assurance System

All members of the University of Vienna are to use the highest international quality standards as benchmarks and apply them to all areas of the University's activities, in research, teaching and studies, as well as in university administration.

"The highest quality in research and research-led teaching is the primary objective of the University of Vienna. Quality assurance is an inherent task of all university members, irrespective of whether or not special instruments are available for this purpose. The reflection and agreement on what constitutes quality in research and teaching and administration, self-assessment of its own performance, and continuous striving for improvement are established practice at the University of Vienna." (University of Vienna, 2020 Development Plan).

The quality assurance system affects all institutions, responsibilities and activities of the University of Vienna considering the specific characteristics of each area. The quality assurance system is not only comprised of special evaluation processes and other procedures, but the performance processes themselves include elements of quality assurance, such as reflecting on the current level of performance and possibilities for improvement. The quality assurance system also entails the periodic evaluation of faculties, centres and service units, feedback instruments from students, the further development of processes for evaluating research and publication activities, as well as quality assurance in staffing decisions, in particular regarding professorial appointment procedures and processes for the filling of tenure track positions.
